Get involved! New Hanover Co. open committee positions

NEW HANOVER CO., NC (WECT) - If you've ever wanted to be involved in county government, here's your chance.  Several boards and committees have open seats, and the county commissioners are now accepting applications.

Below is a list of current vacancies:

  • Cape Fear Community College Board of Trustees
  • Cape Fear Museum Advisory Committee
  • Cape Fear Public Utility Authority - Elected Officials
  • NHC ABC Board
  • NHC Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee

  • NHC Board of Health – Category Pharmacist
  • NHC Cooperative Extension Advisory Council
  • NHC Library Advisory Board
  • NHC Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee

Applications need to be submitted by June 5, so the commissioners can consider them at their meeting on June 18. Applicants must live in New Hanover County.

18th annual Sidewalk Chalk Competition to be held

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 18th annual Sidewalk Chalk Competition, hosted by New Hanover County Schools, will be held Saturday, May 12, according to a press release from a school spokesperson.

The event will be held at Mayfaire Town Center at the water fountain in front of the movie theater there, and art students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover high schools will be assigned to an area to chalk their designs, where they will later be judged by a panel.

The high school that produces the winner will receive a plaque to go on display at his or her school for a year.

The competition will take place from 9 a.m to 11 a.m., with an awards ceremony following afterwards.

New Hanover Co. split on marriage amendment

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The North Carolina constitutional amendment defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman passed with 61% of voters being in favor of the amendment. In all, only seven counties in the state voted to oppose the amendment. Those were: Wake, Orange, Durham, Chatham, Mecklenburg, Buncombe and Watauga.

In New Hanover County, the amendment passed by only 198 votes. A total of 21 precincts in the county voted against the amendment, and most of them came from the downtown and beach areas in the county.

The constitutional amendment reads, "Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."

New Kure Beach tennis session scheduled

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – According to a spokesperson from the Town of Kure Beach, the next session of tennis lessons will begin May 7 and 8.

The lessons are sponsored by Kure Beach Parks and Recreation, and they are being offered on a first-to-register, first-serve basis.

Kure Beach to offer yoga classes starting May 9

Kure Beach to offer yoga classes starting May 9

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Vinyasa Flow yoga classes will soon be offered at the Kure Beach Community Center, according to a spokesperson for the town.

The classes are part of a 10-week session, and they will be held from May 9 through July 25. They will take place each Wednesday night from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., excluding May 16 and July 4.

The cost for the entire session is $65 per person, and participants are asked to bring a yoga mat, towel and water bottle to every class.

Those interested also need to fill out a parks and recreation registration form, and will need to bring it along with the $65 due at the first class.

Two area groups to select winner for free military wedding

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you’re planning on getting hitched anytime soon, and you or your future spouse are in the military, you may be in luck.

LJ Design Studio, an event planning business, is teaming up with a military group called Operation Marry Me Military to give away a free wedding to active military members, according to a spokesperson on behalf of LJ Design.

The chosen wedding will take place on Veteran’s Day of this year, which is Sunday, Nov. 11, in New Hanover County. The wedding will also include free lodging, venues, photographers, caterers, an officiate, a director and more, and all vendors and services come from the county the wedding is being hosted in.

Those who apply for the wedding will have their applications sent to Operation MMM’s headquarters in Oak Island, where a panel of former military judges will select the applicant they feel most deserves the wedding.

Artful Living Group hosts spring yard art sale and fundraiser

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Artful Living Group, located on Carolina Beach, is hosting a spring yard art sale on May 5-6.

What you can expect at this event is a collection of birdhouses made by local artists, which will be on display for public voting. In order to vote you have to contribute $1 to the house(s) of your choice and the house with the most votes wins “Best in Show.” All funds collected will be donated to Nourish N.C.

According to a press release, Nourish N.C. is a local charitable organization that provides weekend and holiday meals for over 190 children in New Hanover County Schools.
