KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Kure Beach is safe for swimming, but a lack of money could mean less beach for residents and tourists to enjoy.
Town leaders held a special meeting on Wednesday to find a solution to their beach renourishment problem. The state and federal budgets do not have money included for the town, so leaders are looking for local help.
One option would be a million-dollar loan from New Hanover County.
But the only thing everyone agreed on was a need for better communication. “We started working on our budget in late February, early March,” said Town Commissioner David Heglar. “If we would have known then what we know today, we would have done some different things.”
Town leaders will meet again next week to make a decision. They have two weeks to find the money and pay the Army Corps of Engineers for the job.
