CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Leaders in Carolina Beach decided that the coastal community could use a little more water for recreation.
Town Council approved the first stages of building of an aquatic center Tuesday night. The community pool would be located next to the recreation center. Council authorized $30,000 to study the area and a layout for design. It also formed an ad hoc committee to determine the possibility of a swimming pool in the future.
Along with the new pool, council members decided to contact state lawmakers for advice on the town’s smoking ban. Carolina Beach needs authorization for the state before it can enforce a resolution that would ban smoking on the beach.
One item that did not involved a vote might be the most important to the future of Carolina Beach. Mayor Pro-tem Steve Shuttleworth said the discussion about beach nourishment money stood out to him.
"Above everything else, this is the biggest issue in Carolina Beach right now,” he said.
Town leaders asked staff to research ways to generate and save money for beach nourishment projects. Shuttleworth said the obvious option of raising property taxes is not a popular plan.
