NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which is sponsored by the New Hanover County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, is in search of volunteers 55 and older to help prepare income tax returns, according to a county spokesperson.
The goal of VITA, a free tax assistance program, is to help people with low to moderate income, elderly, disabled and limited-English speaking people who need help preparing their tax returns.
Volunteers will undergo extensive IRS-approved training and certification, and will be taught basic to advanced tax strategies, tax law and more.
Self-study training starts this month and continues in December, and one week of classroom training will be held in January.
Preparing taxes starts Feb. 1 of next year.
Days and hours for volunteers are flexible.
For more information, call Valerie Smith, the VITA Coordinator at, at 910-798-6406 or email her at vsmith@nhcgov.com.
