NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Saturday, The Give Help2Others telethon to bring people in need water and sewer service was broadcast from noon until 5:00 p.m. from the New Hanover County Government Center.
The telethon featured family-oriented entertainment and activities, like musical entertainment, face painting and food vendors.
The Help2Others campaign was organized by a group of county employees in the hopes of creating a sustainable, long term program targeting struggling families.
According to the county, the H2O committee recognizes the lack of water to the home can easily turn into a public health issue for the entire community.
Charles Smith hosted the first-ever event.
“If you think about it, how could you go through a day without the use of water?" he said.
Smith says over 300 families in the county currently are without water and sewer service, and they need assistance.
"New Hanover County being one of the richest counties in the state to have that number of households without water and sewer services is a major public health concern,” said Smith.
More than $1,000 was raised at the telethon.
