New Hanover County Schools to Sponsor First Annual Teacher Trot 5K

New Hanover County Schools will host the First Annual Teacher Trot 5K Race on Saturday, May 11, 2013. The inaugural event will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will be held at Ashley High School.  Proceeds raised from the event will help to support staff wellness and student physical education programs.  The event is being sponsored by North Carolina Farm Bureau and Port City Neurosurgery.

“The Teacher Trot is a great opportunity for New Hanover County Schools employees, students, parents and community members to run together in an effort to build our district’s wellness programs,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley, an avid runner. “NHCS encourages both employees and students to put their physical wellness as a priority. Healthy lifestyle habits are essential for learning.”

Stop smoking with the help of NHRMC

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover Regional Medical Center is hosting a program created by the American Institute of Preventative Medicine to help people stop smoking.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking contributes to one out of every five deaths in America with its adverse health effects.

The Smokeless® program includes seven classes beginning on April 9 at 7 p.m. in the lobby classroom of the NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital.

According to NHRMC, the program addresses cigarette smoking from a number of perspectives: sociological, psychological, behavioral and physiological.

One NHC teacher will get to drive a new car for a year

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – One New Hanover County teacher will drive away in a new car this summer.

Toyota Scion of Wilmington will allow the teacher who wins the Educator of the Year award to drive a new 2013 Prius Two for one year, according to a news release.

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) –  "Whale of a Weekend” at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher will kick off this weekend.

According to a press release, the two-day event showcases Dolphin Discovery and Right Whale Quest, new exhibits inspired by real whales and a dolphin living in North Carolina coastal waters.

“Dolphin Discovery and Right Whale Quest introduce new and innovative ways to tell the stories of really compelling animals,” said Aquarium Director Peggy Sloan. “They merge technology, game play and a vital conservation message into a truly engaging and fun experience for guests.”

The press release said the weekend also features hands-on education stations to engage visitors to better understand marine mammals.

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) –  Mark your calendars! A "Whale of a Weekend” at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher will kick off this weekend.

In addition, marine mammal experts from around the state will share their knowledge and experience, including representatives from the N.C. Maritime Museum, N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, North Carolina State University's Center for Marine Science and Technology, Surfrider Foundation and University of North Carolina Wilmington Marine Mammal Stranding Program.

Whale of a Weekend is free with Aquarium admission. The program will take place March 2-3, 2013.

11 area schools awarded grants

11 area schools awarded grants

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – Eleven schools in the Cape Fear region have been awarded $5,500 in grant funding, thanks to Scotchman Convenience Stores and the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program.

According to a news release on behalf of VPS Convenience Store Group, Scotchman and school officials worked together to get the grants, which will go toward math and science education.
