Education leaders to answer questions on live TV tonight

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley will join a panel of local middle school principals live on The Learning Network next week.

According to a news release, the NHCS-TV Studio phone lines will be open from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15 for viewer questions for Markley and the following guests:

  • Dr. Sherry Pinto, principal of Holly Shelter Middle School
  • Patrick McCarty, principal of Murray Middle School
  • Robin Meiers, principal of Myrtle Grove Middle School
  • Wade Smith, principal of Noble Middle School
  • William Hatch, principal of Roland-Grise Middle School
  • Sharon Dousharm, principal of Trask Middle School
  •  Dr. Sherry Veasey, principal of Williston Middle School

Viewers can also submit questions via the NHCS Facebook page or Twitter account using the hashtag #callinshow.

Parents of students will have the opportunity to discuss the new core curriculum, tests, dress codes and renovations.

While many will spend the day with their family celebrating, not everyone will be so lucky.

Some soldiers in Afghanistan recorded special Mother's Day greetings to remind the important women in their lives how much they're loved.

Volunteers needed to help plant sea oats

Volunteers needed to help plant sea oats

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Volunteers are needed to help plant sea oats in Kure Beach on Saturday, May 5, according to a press release from a town spokesperson.

The Beach Protection Committee, along with volunteers, will meet at 1 p.m. at 1800 Sand Dollar Court, which is across the street from the Ocean Dunes Recreation Center.

From there, they’ll plant oats on new dunes at the south end of Kure Beach, which are meant to protect the beach.

Volunteers are asked to bring a shovel or small scoop, and dress appropriately.

Open house for Parade of Homes

Open house for Parade of Homes

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Homes on the market in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties will be open to the public on Saturday, for the 26th annual Parade of Homes.

This year, 49 homes built by local builders will be on the tour, ranging in prices from $130,000 to more than $2 million.

The parade is from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and it is sponsored by the Wilmington Cape Fear Home Builders Association.

Admission to the homes is free.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Rising sixth grade students and their families are invited to attend middle school open house.

 At the open house, students and parents will have an opportunity to meet the school’s staff and take building tours, according to a news release from the school system.
