CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - The town of Carolina Beach is ending its contract with town attorney Steve Coggins.
The town sent Coggins a letter Friday, stating that town leaders will go in a new direction.
"We have been concerned about the amount of money the town has paid in legal fees the last few years," Carolina Beach Mayor Ray Rothrock tells WECT.com.
The town council just signed a new contract with Coggins in November, but the deal has an escape clause with the promise of paying for the services already rendered.
Mayor Rothrock says the town is looking to cut expenses and this is one way. Council will send out a request for proposals for new legal services. In the interim, Rothrock says he's confident Coggins will work the town on pending legal matters and the upcoming transition.
