CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) – Another coastal community in New Hanover County is considering a smoking ban on the sand. Town leaders in Carolina Beach will hear what residents have to say about banning cigarette butts from the beach.
Councilman Lonnie Lashley proposed the public discussion after hearing a few complaints about used cigarettes littering the beach.
"We just want to see what everyone else has to say about it," said Lashley.
Town Council will listen to suggestions, but Lashley said he doesn't expect to make any major decisions at the Tuesday night meeting.
"No motions, no action," said Lashley. "At least not from me."
Councilman Bob Lewis said the issue would focus more on clean sand than a smoke-free zone.
"I don't smoke, but I'm not here to tell someone where they can and cannot smoke," said Lewis.
Freeman Park would be excluded from the possibly ban. Town Council will listen to comments at their July 10 meeting. The same night they will consider suggestions about the future of land originally intended for beach access and a pier.
