KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Kure Beach leaders realized they can't make a decision on a smoking ban for their beaches.
At Thursday night's meeting, they found out that decision has to come from the state because the town doesn't own the property.
Mayor Dean Lambeth felt it was time to bring up the smoking ban since discussions at Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach are stirring up issues.
According to Lambeth, it will be nearly impossible to enforce a ban, especially when jurisdiction ends at the high water mark. Also, drive-up places on the beach are public property.
Carolina Beach Town Council voted earlier this month to instruct its staff to begin writing an ordinance to enact a smoking ban on some parts of the beach.
People in Wrightsville Beach will vote on a possible smoking ban in November.
At the meeting, it was announced that Kure Beach will be closing Dow Road from K Street to Ocean Street from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 25 to film for the movie, We're The Millers.
