NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Deputies with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office along with other emergency responders have found the body of a 13-year-old Rocky Point boy who went missing while swimming in New Hanover County.
According to Sgt. Jerry Brewer, Shandon Tyre Wright was found about a mile south of Snow's Cut. Emergency personnel located Wright around 9:00 Monday morning in the water near Sugar Loaf sand dune in Carolina Beach State Park.
Officials say the teen went missing around 1:40 Saturday afternoon. Brewer said the boy, his parents and a 3-year-old sibling had been swimming just west of the Snow's Cut Bridge when the younger child became distressed.
As the father pulled out the 3-year-old child, Wright went under the water.
Authorities with the Wilmington Fire Department, New Hanover County Fire Rescue, New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, Carolina Beach Police Department, United States Coast Guard, and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission began searching for the 13-year-old Saturday afternoon.
They continued their search for a second straight day Sunday. They suspended their search for the boy around 8:00 Sunday night to get a fresh start Monday morning.
