NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – County leaders will decide
who is responsible for any extra costs associated with the future nourishment
of Kure Beach.
New Hanover County Commissioners will consider signing a
deal with the Army Corps of Engineers for the project. Historically, the state
handles the federal agreement, but this contract is different.
Commissioner Rick Catlin explained that this is the first
time the Corps will enter an understanding of contributing authority for a plan
to nourish a beach. The state does not want to cover the cost of the project if
it exceeds the original estimate.
"Anytime you build something, there's always an estimate,"
he said.
Carolina Beach recently gave more than $1 million to Kure
Beach to help pay for the addition of new beach sand. In case that money is not
enough, commissioners need to create a plan to pay for the extra cost. They
will hold a work session Thursday afternoon before their regularly scheduled
agenda brief.
