Hurricane wipes out much of the dunes in part of Kure Beach | News

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - A homeowners association in Kure Beach is struggling to keep sand in front of its property.

Hurricane Sandy helped take out quite a bit of sand over the weekend. The president of the HOA board, Bill Moore, tells WECT.com the erosion problems with the beach sand in front of Ocean Dunes date back to Hurricane Irene. Moore says the HOA spent about $110,000 to bring in more sand last year. That covered the dunes in front of the buildings, which stretches less than half a mile long. It did not include the $14,000 spent to rebuild walkways to the beach and a couple more thousand to replant sea oats in the dunes.

Today, Moore said about 3/4 of those dunes are now gone. The dunes were ten feet high and twenty feet wide at the bottom.  Now, the high spot is 5.5 feet high.

Moore says they hope to work with the town and other agencies to rebuild what they can with a small bulldozer. The Army Corps of Engineers will handle the beach on all of Pleasure Island with a renourishment project this coming Spring. The HOA hopes the small fix will hold out until then.
