KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - The New Year's Eve ball drop on Pleasure Island won't take place on Kure Beach's new park as it was originally planned. That's because the park's completion date was pushed back.
Mayor Dean Lambeth says he was disappointed about the setback, which he blames on recent bad weather. Because of a dispute with the first contractor, the Ocean Front Park is a little over five years in the making.
The mayor says the park should be done in the next two weeks.
"There were some that were against it from the beginning," said Lambeth. "And there were some that were for it - but the closer it gets to completion the more excited everyone gets - they like the swings they like the benches."
New Year's festivities will still be taking place, in front of the pier. They begin at 9pm and will last until midnight
