Cape Fear Astronomy Society hosting stargazing party

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Cape Fear Astronomy Society will be hosting a free stargazing party soon to kick off the start of the North Carolina Science Festival, according to an event organizer.

From 7:30 p.m. onward, participants will meet at Carolina Beach State Park Friday, April 5 to learn about and look at the night sky.

Telescopes will be set up, and in case of rain or cloudy skies, attendees will get the chance to look at the sky in the visitor center’s auditorium.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is offering folks a special look behind the scenes at what goes on there, according to an aquarium official.

Sunday, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27, children and their parents can take a guided look at spaces for animal holding, husbandry, how food is prepared for the animals, life support systems and more.

The cost is $15 for those 13 and older and $13 for those ages 8 to 12. Aquarium admission is included in that price.

Touch sharks in the Aquarium's newest exhibit

PLEASURE ISLAND, NC (WECT) – The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher opened a new Bamboo Shark exhibit over the weekend.

Visitors to the aquarium are encouraged to reach out and touch the shark featured in this exhibit.

The touch pool features two species of baby bamboo sharks: whitespotted and brownbanded. These two species are considered harmless to humans and are listed as “Near Threatened” on the World Conservation Union Red List, according to a press release from the Aquarium.

The two species of baby bamboo sharks are native to the Indo-West Pacific Ocean region.
