Drivers traveling on Dow Road may see smoke Thursday

CAROLINA BEACH (WECT) - According to Carolina Beach Today, blog, Carolina Beah State Park staff will conduct a controlled burn on Thursday, April 18 at the park Visitor Center and park entrance gate. This is normal and park crews do this yearly.

 This will take place from 11am to 3:30pm. Carolina Beach Police department is aware of the brun and will assist if necessary. 

Drivers traveling on Old Dow Road and Dow Road may see smoke during the burn. Crews ask drivers to use caution and be alert in the area.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Aquarium at Fort Fisher is hoping folks will come check out its two newest exhibits this weekend, and Friday, WECT got a sneak peek at them.

Starting this weekend, the North Carolina aquarium at Fort Fisher will be rolling out the exhibits Dolphin Discovery and the Right Whale Quest.

Aquarium director Peggy Sloan says they are trying to attract an older audience using these new interactive exhibits.

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Aquatic animal-lovers will have the chance to check out a fun, upcoming event scheduled to take place at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

A Whale of a Weekend will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 2-3, according to an event organizer.

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Five of 49 cold-stunned sea turtles rescued from North Carolina’s coast have been taken to the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher for treatment, according to an aquarium spokesperson.

The unusually cold weekend temperatures caused the turtles to become cold-stunned, and to help the public understand sea turtle conservation, the aquarium will be offering special behind-the-scenes turtle rehab hours this weekend.

For $5 per person (excluding aquarium admission), you can go on one of the following tours:

KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) – Two of eight endangered loggerhead sea turtles that traveled more than 800 miles to receive medical care at the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher have recuperated and been released into the ocean, according to an aquarium spokesperson.

According to the aquarium, the eight animals were injured in a mass cold-stunning event along the New England coast in December. More than 150 turtles were rescued after becoming ill from the prolonged exposure to cold water temperatures.

The turtles received help at Fort Fisher, getting daily medical care including antibiotics, special diets and close monitoring.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher is offering folks a special look behind the scenes at what goes on there, according to an aquarium official.

Sunday, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27, children and their parents can take a guided look at spaces for animal holding, husbandry, how food is prepared for the animals, life support systems and more.

The cost is $15 for those 13 and older and $13 for those ages 8 to 12. Aquarium admission is included in that price.
